Press Release

Jonathan Forster, the Principal, reported that staff and students were absolutely delighted by the GCSE results, which were outstanding.    70% of grades were passed at A* and A and 100% of pupils gained 7 or more passes at  A* - C.  14 students, over 30%, obtained A* and A grades in all subjects.
Pride of place goes to Laura Turpin, who was amongst the top ten students according to Edexcel, the UK’s largest awarding body.
Laura sat the Biology examination earlier this summer and the results, issued this month, show that out of 9608 candidates, Laura achieved one of the highest overall marks.
Jerry Jarvis, Edexel’s Managing Director, said:  “This is a tremendous achievement and testament to the hard work students put into preparing for their examinations.  We send our congratulations to Laura.”

Amongst Laura's other achievements this year have been her success at the Shropshire Festival where she won the "Reading from the Book of Common Prayer" and in February took part in the National Final of the Cranmer Awards in London. She came second in the English Speaking Union Schools' Public Speaking Competition.
She also was the Speaker in the Moreton Hall team which won the Shropshire/Chester round of the North West Finals and went on to the National Final in London.

Moreton is launching its newly re-designed nine-hole golf course on 26th and 27th July with a weekend of free golf for everyone when from 10.00am to 6.00pm anyone can turn up and play. The course has had a complete new redesign, reworking the par three holes, adding a couple of new par fours, reshaping the fairways and changing the bunkers.
The redesign has been done by Justin Griffiths, a qualified PGA preofessional, who has helped design courses as far afield as Germany. He will be staying on to offer tuition as well as continuing to help develop and maintain the course.

Tennis

DFS classic at the Priory Club, Edgbaston.
On Monday 9th June, a very hot and sunny day, Jenny Sanderson and Sarah Peters took the Removes to the Priory Club, Edgbaston to watch the DFS classic tennis open. They were very priviliged to be treated to a coaching session in the morning by Warwickshire LTA coaches and spent the afternoon watching some excellent tennis!

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde - The Musical
This thrilling musical was performed by girls from Remove, Lower and Upper IV. Although the junior production there was nothing junior about it! Everything from the acting to the set design was of a truly high standard. The live band was excellent and helped to create the clean, clear set changes which held each scene together and enhanced the tableau for the first scene.
This was one of the best performances ever seen at Moreton.

The May Ball held on Friday the 23rd of May was a fantastic night with approximately 450 guests entering our Magical Marqueed walled garden through a six-foot looking glass, which was designed and painted by one of our sixth form students. The night was simply great fun with a buzzing atmosphere, wonderful band, outstanding food and the Mad Hatter, White Rabbit, Alice and the Queen of Hearts popping up all over the place!  Profits from the night will be divided between the League of Friends to the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital and the Moreton Hall Foundation which raises funds to create
bursaries and scholarships enabling students from different backgrounds to enjoy all that Moreton offers.
Photos from the Ball can be viewed and ordered from prêt-a-portrait.

Cheshire Festival

Busy schedules meant that only 8 students from Moreton were able to take part in this year’s Cheshire Festival of Speech and Drama held on Saturday, May 10th.   However, all the girls performed extremely well in the face of strong competition.

Confirmation

On Friday, May 9th 26 girls from Moreton were confirmed by the Right Reverend Alan Smith in St. Oswald's Church, Oswestry, 5 Upper Fifth and 21 Lower Fifth.  This service was the culmination of a course of weekly sessions which began in September and which included lots of discussion, videos, and guest panels coming in to answer questions. April saw the group meeting the Bishop for tea at school. After the service which involved many Moretonians as ushers, readers, acolytes and singers, there was a buffet supper for the candidates and their guests back at school to celebrate

On the first Wednesday of term the whole school and some staff took part in the Children's Marathon Challenge in aid of Childhood Leukaemia Support and Research. It involved a ‘marathon’ walk or run -  26 check-in points of a pre-set track with different size track for different age group. This very successful afternoon raised the fantastic amount of £2313.97.
More success with words

On March 15th three talented Year 11 students took yet another step forward up the ladder of success, when, representing Shropshire and Chester areas, they won the North-West Regional Finals of the English Speaking Union’s Public Speaking Competition.
HG as Chair, LT as Speaker and CM as Questioner had as their topic ’Women are held back in the workplace’.
With another topic to tackle, they will be heading for London for the National Finals on Saturday, April 26th.

Moretonians take up the challenge of Maths with great success!

Moreton had not only taken up the challenge of World Maths Day with an enthusiasm which included answering over 55,000 practice questions before the actual ‘day’ began on Tuesday 4th March at 11am, but fielding an excellent group of girls in this year’s Intermediate Mathematics Challenge.  Girls from Years 9, 10 and 11 took part,  and 13 students were expert enough to gain one of the coveted Bronze certificates. 10 students, including 2 Year 9s- PG and AO, won Silvers.  However, there were four Gold Award winners: JD, GA with the two highest scorers who have qualified for the next stage, the special Pink Kangaroo competition, year 10 students, HD and RL.  The latter, with an amazing score of 90, also gained the Best in School Award.
Nevertheless, all the school from Year 2 upwards to Year 13 will have been tackling the maths problems set in the  World Maths Day competition itself! (And the staff!)

Cranmer Award Success

On Saturday February 23rd three students from Moreton Hall could be found in London taking part in the National Finals of the Thomas Cranmer Awards. For this event the participants have to learn by heart and present sections of the Book of Common Prayer. Moreton Hall has sent many girls to the finals over the years and all have done very well.  This year’s competitors were no exception, no mean achievement when there were 14 finalists from all over the country in each of the age groups. Although PG  (Year 9), who, like the other girls was representing the Shropshire Festival and Moreton Hall, was not placed in the Junior Section, she gave a very confident presentation.
Entering the Senior Section, PB (Year 10) was awarded a Highly Commended Certificate, coming into the final four selected by the eminent judges. LT (Year 11) came second and won £150. This has been a busy term for LT as only four weeks ago she was the Speaker in the ESU Public Speaking Competition team which won the Shropshire/Chester round.  She now has a new speech to write for the next round which takes place on March 15th.
