The strong senior management team is instrumental in the continuous improvement of the school while being custodians of its values and traditions. The leadership and management effectiveness of the headteacher make an outstanding contribution to the success of the school and to the well being of its members.

Main Weaknesses

There are no significant weaknesses. The team discussed a number of curricular and organisational issues with the headmaster and governors which would serve to improve even further the high standards of provision.

Standards in Subjects

In nearly all subjects the level of pupils' attainment is commensurate with their ages and abilities. Throughout the school pupils make good progress. All the main departments of the school have achieved performances at grades A* -C in the GCSE examinations that were at least as good as the average of all maintained selective schools in England and Wales, while several departments did significantly better than this. A level results in most subjects are comparable with those achieved in maintained selective schools.

Quality of Teaching

The quality of the teaching contributes to the attainment and progress of students. In more than nine lessons out of ten teaching was judged to be at least satisfactory; it was frequently good or very good and in some case it was excellent. The positive relationships between staff and pupils contribute to good learning. The school benefits from the high calibre of its staff who undoubtedly contribute to the very high academic standards reached by its students.

Quality of Learning

Pupils are competent learners who respond very positively in lessons. They are well motivated, showing interest in their work and taking pride in their achievements. Pupils in all stages throughout the school and across all subjects, demonstrate a good range of learning skills and use them in a way that contributes to the achievement of good standards.

Assessment, Recording and Reporting

There is a whole school policy on assessment, recording and reporting. This provides useful guidance to teachers in giving the context, purpose and the process for evaluating and commenting on all aspects of pupils' attainment and progress. The school policy document on reporting contains helpful advice on formative and summative reporting, leading to the establishment of realistic targets for improvement for each pupil. Target setting in turn links with the tutor system when tutors review progress and help pupils to work towards their set targets. This process of support and constant review of pupils' progress is consistent with the ethos of the school

Curriculum

The curriculum provided by the school offers a broad and balanced general education suited to the age and ability of its pupils, and is consistent with National Curriculum guidelines, enhanced by the inclusion of classical subjects. All pupils have access to the full curriculum experience on offer. Recent changes in the weekly timetable have presented difficulties in some subject areas and the situation merits review. The provision made through the boarding experience and the full range of extra-curricular activities gives a very wide range of developmental activities of benefit to pupils.

Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff

The school is very well staffed throughout. The teaching staff bring to their work a considerable amount of teaching experience, even though more than half of the staff have been with the school for less than 6 years. The number, qualifications, experience and deployment of teaching staff are appropriate to this school. A few teachers do not have full teaching qualifications but this does not have any marked effect on teaching performance. These teachers are suitably qualified and experienced in their subject specialism.

Resources for Learning

Sufficient resources of very good quality are available in nearly all departments to support teaching and learning. The wide range of resources available is used effectively.

Premises and Accommodation

The accommodation provides a positive environment for learning. In general the space available for teaching and activities is good. Teaching rooms are generally well suited to departmental teaching needs. The library and the ICT Centre provide very good learning environments. Some of the buildings are isolated and pupils are disinclined to visit those areas alone in the evenings for practice sessions

Health and Safety

The general awareness of health and safety issues within the school is high and effective steps are taken to minimise risk.

Links with Parents and the Community

The many worthwhile links and support activities between parents and school provide a rich source of communication and contact.

Personal Development and Pastoral Care of Pupils

Personal development through developing personal responsibility is fostered throughout the school in a variety of ways. Pupils are confident and relaxed with each other and in the company of staff and visitors. Pupils' self esteem is justifiably high and they feel valued as individuals. There is a quality boarding environment at this school. This is based on an atmosphere and ethos which places the pupils at the heart of the boarding community and supports them with very professional and caring boarding staff. The atmosphere in the boarding houses is excellent, creating a sense of purpose that engages pupils and includes a large element of fun. There is a real sense of community, where all feel mutually supported. Parents speak highly of the boarding experience created for their daughters.

Governance and Management

The governance and management of the school are well structured and effectively organised. The school is managed and led effectively and efficiently by the headmaster assisted by the deputy headteachers, and working closely with the bursar. There is a strong sense of purpose among members of the senior management team. The positive educational direction in the school is unmistakably influenced by the leadership of the headmaster. The values of the school are clearly demonstrated in the daily activities of the school and the aims of the school are achieved
